SMALL SIPS is a Melbourne-based trio, and a new studio venture for former
PARADISE MOTEL members MATTHEW AULICH and MATTHEW BAILEY, working together again and joined this time by friend and musical cohort, KARL SMITH of
SODASTREAM.
Their debut album, ‘THE MORNING RIPPLES’, is a striking album and an incredibly accomplished debut, with breathtaking arrangements, stark musical beauty and deep emotional complexity. It is especially recommended for fans of disparate mood-setters such as BONNIE “PRINCE” BILLY, RED HOUSE PAINTERS and TINDERSTICKS.
SMALL SIPS recorded ‘THE MORNING RIPPLES’ at the South Bank ABC studios, Melbourne with engineer LEAH BAKER. Vocals and finishing touches were added in more low-key surrounds at Karl’s home studio.
Playing alongside SMALL SIPS on ‘THE MORNING RIPPLES’ are:
· LAURA MACFARLANE and AMY CLARKE of NINETYNINE on vibes and sax
· MIKE NOGA of THE DRONES (and his own solo fame) on drums
· PETE COHEN of SODASTREAM on saw
· NICOLE HURTUBISE of TRIXIE’S UNDERSEA ADVENTURE on accordion, and
· CAMPBELL SHAW on violin(s), a long time collaborator with Matt Aulich.
J. Walker (Machine Translations) mixed the record while playing host to Small Sips at his Gippsland studio. They shivered in spite of layers of blankets on cold nights but between mixing sessions put on weight at sit-down lunches of hearty country fare.
‘The Morning Ripples’ is licensed in Australia and New Zealand to Rogue Records (CocoRosie, Dimmer, The Hold Steady, Caribou, Vashti Bunyan, Daniel Johnston among others).
THE MORNING RIPPLES is out now through
ROGUE RECORDS /
INERTIA MUSIC.
